Thirteenth abandoned photo: The cyclist

I was impressed because of a large image showing a breast in the streets of Ljubljana, the capital city of Slovenia. The image wasn't advertising, so I thought it was a street photography exhibition. But I didn't  find any information supporting that hyphotesis. To date, I still don't know the reason because the image was there. But in any case, I stayed in front of the image and then I was more impressed because I noticed that people walking in front of the image didn't pay attention to the poster. All people, pedestrians, drivers or cyclists ignored the giant breast while I couldn't put my sight out the image. And then I said "let's take a photo". The cyclist arrived at the moment I was taking the photograph, he just passed by and, such as all other people, he didn't paid attention to the poster. I like the composition, and here is the photograph.

Twelfth abandoned photo: Thoughts. Found!

"Thoughts" is a photo I took in Leipzig, Germany. It's a tricky image, but it's totally real, I mean, I didn't use any software to create the superimposed images. It's a reflection on a glass and a little more things. The photo is one of my urban cosmovisions. Sometimes when I'm walking I find special visions, images that take me and invite me to think about other ways to watch the common world. In this image, I felt I was looking into the mind of that man while he was looking into my mind too. And I was afraid of that!

So, I left these "thoughts" on the streets, I hope someone finds them!

The Earth's satellite, the Moon. What kind of power does the moon have that humain being feel a strong attraction for it? I don't have an answer for that question. But there is a poem explaining how beautiful the Moon is. 

You can take the moon in spoonfuls
or in tablets once every two hours.
It works as a hypnotic and sedative
and also provides relief
for those who have an overdose of philosophy.
A piece of moon in your pocket
is a better charm than a rabbit’s paw:
it helps to find someone to love,
to be rich without anybody knowing
and keeps doctors and hospital away.
You can give it as a dessert to children
when they can’t get to sleep,
and a few drops of moon in the eyes of the old
help to die well.
Put a tender moon leaf
Under your pillow
and you will see what you would like to see
and always carry a little bottle of moon air
for when you feel you’re suffocating
and give the moon’s key
to prisoners, and the disenchanted.
For those sentenced to death
and those condemned to life
there is no better tonic than the moon
in precisely measures doses.

Itsn't a wave of mutilation, it's just "The wave". Another photo of "Los Cabos" in México. I took it  early  in the morning, I was doing "whale watching", well, I did just the half, "watching" because any whale appeared. It was a windy morning and the water was jumping and jumping, so, I forgot whales and I paid my attention in waves. I got some nice images. Here is the one I think is the  best.

I took this photo in the "Widow's beach" (Los Cabos, Mex). Name of the place says everything, isn't the safest place to swim! There are strong water currents and rocks, but despite the danger to doing swimming, it's a beautiful beach to have a peaceful moment because usually there are no people in the place. Moreover, water and rocks form many particular pictures and sounds. I give you one of those images, now you can image the water sound.

Eighth abandoned photo: A burning plain and its metaphors

The title "A burning plain and its metaphors" is in relation to the work of two of my favortites writers, Susan Sontag (1993-2004) and Juan Rulfo (1917-1986). Sontag wrote several novels and many essays; her most famous book is a collection of essays about photography "On photography" (1977), that is one of the most important books about photography in the 20th Century. As opposed to the prolific Sontag's work, Rulfo wrote only two books, "The burning plain and other stories" (1953) and "Pedro Páramo" (1955). However, the low production of Rulfo isn´t related to his high quality as author, "The burning plain..." and "Pedro Páramo" are considered ones of the most important books in the Spanish literature.

In addition to writing, Rulfo had another artistic interest- photography. Interestingly, Sontag  loved the Rulfo's work, not only his books but also his photographies. She considered Rulfo was one of the best photographers of the 20th Century. Last year, a book showing 100 Rulfo's photographies was published and editors of the book dedicated it to the memory of Sontag. The edition work of the book started years ago when Sontag was still alive, so the editors asked to Sontag a text for the book and she accepted, however because of health problems, Sontag cancelled the task. 

I must say I didn't know about the artistic connection between Sontang and Rulfo, I knew it last year when I read the story above in a brochure of a photography exhibition showing the Rulfo´s work printed in the book. I like very much Sontag's work and Rulfo's work, they're two of my artistic gurus. So, the image in "A burning plain and its metaphors" is inspired by the work of these great artists. I took the photo many years ago somewhere in México. I was on the road and than I saw the burning plain, I was in a car with some friends but we couldn't stopping on highway to take the photo, so, I took it while the car was running fast. 

I don't think someone will pick up this photo, althought if it happens, I'll be very vey happy. And I don't think it because I left it on the place where Sontag lies. So, I'm afraid people will think it's a souvenir object for her. But it's a gift for her and for anybody who find it. We'll see, we'll see!

Seventh abandoned photo: "I have to eat that prickly pear"

A prickly pear, cactus fruit or tuna is the fruit of the nopal cactus. The tuna is a particular fruit because it has a peel with prickles; thus before eating a tuna, the prickles have to be removed first and the then the fruit can be peeled. The procedure has to be done carefully; without having experience, it’s easy to get prickles on the fingers. Once you have peeled it, you can eat it! It’s a very fresh fruit and it has a sweet taste. Because of its prickly peel the tuna is sometimes related to the idea that it's something that may cause damage, you have to be careful hanging a tuna. And because of its red color, also a tuna is sometimes related to the image of a heart. Thus, "I have to eat that prickly pear" is a photo about love. And that’s all.

don’t usually like photos having a combination of black and white printing/color printing technique. I think a photo should be printed either on black and white or on color, but it shouldn’t be printed in a mix of those printing techniques. I don’t have any scientific/artistic reason to think that, it’s just I don’t like it. But I’m an adaptable and open mind person. I think that sometimes using both printing color techniques is good for the visual impact and the concept of the image. "I have to eat that prickly pear" is, for me, an example of that idea. For love and photography, adaptability is a good quality.

"The juggler" is a photo I took in a light festival on the streets. Of course it was at night, lots of candles were used to light the streets and also performances were presented during the night. I saw the juggler with light balls and then I saw he was in front of a heart formed by candles. I took the photo because I thought it was a poetic image. I mean, sometimes love is like a juggling act. It isn't?

Third abandoned photo, a lost photo!

Bah oui! Here is another abandoned and lost photo! It's the third abandonded photo "Martha and the sacred drink". That's the story. Two weeks ago I was in a very nice city, a city of big palaces and classical café bars.  I liked the city because walking along the streets you see it´s a place plenty of music, sculptures, big museums and art galleries, you feel art is in the air. I thought the place was very ad hoc to leave a photo and I did it.

I left the "Martha and the sacred drink" photo because I wanted to leave an image uncommon for people there. Well, I think it's uncommon because huichol culture isn't well known around the world. Even in México people don't know about the huichol culture. For me, it's a way to show the richness of the indigenous Mexican culture. And it's an image to think about the importance of maternal cultures not only in México but also in all other countries.

Well, to date I don´t have news about "Martha and the sacred drink", but I know the photo moved of place. The explanation of that is here. I must say I have some rules to leave the photos, a rule is "Don't come back to the street I leave a photo". Although in the case of the third abandonded photo I broke this rule and I came back by chance to the street I left the photo. Everybody knows humain being has weakness and I had mine. So, I turned my head to the exact same place where the photo was last time I saw it...but the photo wasn't there! Of course I have so many questions about the chance of the photo! I mean, the photo wasn't there! Did someone take it? If someone did it, why them didn't write a comment in the blog?  Maybe the photo finder doesn't want to leave a comment, or maybe someone took it and threw it in the trash? But I know the photo moved! I know it! And that's the reason why I prefer don't go back to the place I left the photo. If I know the photo moved, I'll be desperataly waiting news about the photo! And that's a mental torture to me! Sometimes, doesn't know about something it's the best way to be calm. But I'm not calm and I want to know about the third photo!

Well, well, well, I left the first abandoned photo on the streets weeks ago and I don't have news about it! It seems the photo is a lost object! My head is full of questions about the end of the first abandoned photo story! Moreover, the first abandoned photo itsn't the only one lost photo! Other abandoned photos are a lost object too! Well, I think it's a good idea to show the place where I left the lost photos. I won't tell you the city I left them, but I´ll show an image with the photo such as left it on the street. Fifth abandoned photo: Huichol woman carrying bags

Another photo about the huichol culture! In this case itsn't a photo about the tesgüino ceremony; it's a photo I took when I visited the mountains in which the huichol villages are. I was there because a friend invited me to see a deer hunting ceremony. The deer is a god for the huichols and they hunt it  for a special ceremony. After  the huichols hunt a deer, they eat it to get blessings. The hunting happens at the valleys at mountains, the huichols camp on a valley and they walk around to look for the deer. If the animal doesn't appear soon, the searching will take several days. And if after days a deer doesn't appear, the camping will move to other valley and the deer search will continue. I tell that because I took the fifth abandoned photo while we moved a camping. I was impressed by the excellent organization to move the camping and because of the equality on tasks for women, men and children. Everybody took something to move and the camping was got up in less than 10 minutes. When I saw everybody helped to carry something, I thought I could help too. I took with me a sack of corn and my backpack, sleeping bag and tent. So, I started to walk but a few minutes later I was really tired, the sack was very heavy and it was very difficult to walk with it on me, moreover, we were walking on a rough land and it was hard to walk on it. When I was almost falling a woman of the group  helped me, she took the sack with her and put it on her head. Then she smiled to me and walked. I was impressed by her strength! After taking a breath I took her a photo. And here the photo is!

In addition to the story, I like this photo because, for me, it shows some particular elements. It talks about moving of course, moving of people, but also moving of things. Pay attention on the plastic bag in the photo, the bag the woman holds with her left hand. It's a bag comming from a multinational store. How did it arrive to the woman hand? Because, although the store is a multinational company, it doesn´t exist in México. Probably the bag went from the USA to México. Huichol people sometimes go to the USA to look for a job and live there. In the USA, they buy stuff to send to México, so, possibly that bag went from the USA to México with  things for a huichol family and it arrived at huichol lands. Well, that's my hypothesis! It's seems a logical argument for me. We live in a global world! What do you think?

Fourth abandoned photo: Jesús, Martha and the tesgüino

The fourth abandoned photo, "Jesús, Martha and the tesgüino" is another image showing the tesgüino ceremony. In this image Jesús, the Martha's husband, takes a plastic bottle of tesgüino while Martha holds some objects for using in the ceremony. Using the tesgüino and other sacred objects, the couple will ask to their divinities to bless their family. The photo shows a mix of modern and traditional elements, Jesús and Martha weas traditional clothes, bracelets and necklaces, but at same time they also wear digital watches. Moreover, they are using plastic bottles, other typical object of modern life. Thus, I think the photo shows  how the indigenous family has adapted its habits to modern life, but keeping its traditions. It's occurs specially for huichol families moving from their  native villages to the city, such is the case for Martha and Jesús.

I must say I printed this photo! I sometimes work  in the dark room and although nowadays it's easier printing photos using an automatic photo lab, I prefer to print a photo by myself. That was the case for the fourth abandoned photo. So, this time the photo involved more personal work! Because of that I will be very happy is someone take it from the streets! Let's cross the fingers!

Found! Second abandoned photo!

I'm very happy to know the second photo was found! I must say I felt discouraged because the first abandoned photo wasn't found, I thought it wasn´t a positive sign for the beginning of the project...But then I thought that a beginning is always hard! Thus, I took it easy and decided to continue leaving photos on the street! That's the idea of this project! 

Days ago I walked on the streets of Brussels and I left the second abandoned photo. I like very much Brussels, so I enjoyed leaving the photo in that pretty city. Although at same time it was hard because I had the bad feeling of the previous failed experience. Itsn't easy to leave on the street something you like, something you did...On the street a photo is a vulnerable object, a photo on a street looks like a discarded object! It could finish in the garbage truck! For me, it's stressful thinking about that. But I always trust that someone will take the photo. In the case of the second abandoned photo, someone took it! And I enjoyed a lot when I got the post from the second abandoned photo finder, it's was great! What's very nice it's to know the photo finder likes the photo and it's also very nice to share my photos with someone who likes my work. So, I'll continue working on the project. Here I am. Thanks to the first photo finder for share his comments in the blog!

Third abandoned photo: Martha and the sacred drink

Martha and the sacred drink is a photo of my portfolio about the huichol people, an ethnic group in México. Huichol people keep their old traditions and they perform many religious ceremonies during the year. Although they are very friendly people, it's very difficult to be invited for they to visit their villages or participate on their ceremonies. I have some huichols friend and I'm a very fortunate person because they are my friends, but also because they have invited me to participate in some huichol ceremonies. Moreover, I must say vey few people have chance to see a huichol ceremony. 

Eight years ago I was on a huichol ceremony dedicated to ask blessings for the family members and drinking tesgüino (teswino). Tesgüino is a corn based sacred drink, it's prepared for drinking in special ceremonies and it can be drinking during social, religious or familiar celebrations. The tesgüino is prepared during several days because corn is dried under the sun light, then it's  grinded and mixed with boiled water. After boiling, the mix is storaged in a barrel to induce fermentation. Then after days into the barrel, the tesgüino is ready to drink. Because of the fermenation, the tesgüino is an alcoholic drink, it' has a sour taste and it's a refreshing drink; I think it's very taste! Well, about the ceremony, it consisted on going to a canyon in a sacred mountain to leave religious offerings on an altar. After leaving the offerings, all people drunk tesgüino, men, women, and children, it was a social ceremony in which all family members participated. Thus, in that ceremony I took the third abandoned photo. The photo shows the moment when Martha, a family mother, drinks the tesgüino; although it's seems a simple image,  it shows a intimate moment of Martha, but also it shows an intimate moment of the huichol culture.

Second abandoned photo: Mask vs Mask. Found!

Such as the first  abandoned photo, Mask vs Mask photo is part of my lucha libre (wrestiling) portfolio. Interestingly I didn’t take this photo in México, I did it in Brussels! Two years ago there was a lucha libre show there; that show was part of series of Mexican culture exhibitions done in the frame of the Bicentennial of Mexican Independence and the Centennial of the Mexican Revolution Celebration. At that time, las luchas were in tour around the world for visiting countries having Mexican communities. Therefore, las luchas tour visited Belgium and they presented in a concert hall in Brussels. So, I was in that place and I must say the atmosphere in the concert hall was as similar as the atmosphere in a luchas arena in México. It wasn’t strange taking into account there were many Mexicans watching the show, but I must say all people, not only the Mexican ones, were caught by the energy of the luchas and the luchadores (wrestlers). However, there was a particular difference between the luchas in the hall concert and luchas in the arena-the lighting. In the hall concert there was a warm lighting while every time I was in an Mexican arena there was a cold lighting. Hence because of the warm lighting I got photos that look very theatrical; the second abandoned photography is a good example of that. 


"Mask vs Mask" photo is also a good example showing the importance of the mask in the Mexican luchas. The luchadores have either a mask or long hair as personal sign. In the case of the hair, it's a symbol of strength I think it's related to the symbolism of the Samson's hair. It should be remained Samson was an unbeatable man and its strength was given by his long hair. In the case of the mask, it represents a symbolic object covering the face −the identity− of the luchador. Wearing a mask is having the honor of being a masked wrestler because a mask chooses the man, isn’t the man who chooses the mask. As example, in the Santo myth the mask pass from father to son and the mask wearer has to ennoble the silver mask. People loving masked wrestlers love the character; they love the mask, the mystery behind the mask. Wearing mask in luchas is an original characteristic of the Mexican modern wrestling and that peculiarity has existed for more than 60 years. Isn’t easy to explain the reason why masks are used in Mexican luchas, but hyphoteses have been suggested. For instance, wearing mask has been related to Prehispanic rituals which men used anthropomorphic masks. To this respect, design of Mexican luchas masks have been correlated to Prehispanic sculptures, such is the case of the Blue Demon mask. 


Because of the importance of the mask, masked wrestlers have to wear the mask any time, but especially during the lucha. Hence put-off a mask of a wrestler is an offense and aggression. In fact, when rivalry exists between masked wresters (or between a long hair and a masked wrestler), it can be done a lucha, Mask vs Mask, for putting-off the mask of the looser. If an enmascarado (masked wrestler) lose its mask, he will be humiliated in front of the public. Losing the mask  can be the end of the wrestler career. That's the reason why “Mask vs Mask” is a photo showing a stressful moment, a decisive moment in the luchas. Will he lose his mask?

First abandoned photo: Fighting and dancing.

I chose a photo from my portfolio about “lucha libre” (wrestling) to start my photographic project. I like very much la lucha libre mexicana although I must say I’m not an expert on the subject. But I know a lot about la lucha because I grew in Mexico, a country where the wrestling sport is part of the popular culture. I grew watching luchas on TV and also watching many classic wrestling movies in which playing the biggest legends of all time in the Mexican wrestling, El Santo and Blue Demon.  I saw an on live wrestling combat by first time when I was a teenager and I loved it! Twelve years ago, when I had my first reflex camera, I started going to the arena to see las luchas and taking photos. Mexican wrestling is  an attractive photographic subject because there are many interesting elements to shoot, the wrestlers, the combat, the amazing jumps, and the public. But la lucha libre mexicana is more than just a show. Las luchas have many cultural elements, starting with the fact that a combat represent a battle between the good and the evil. Mexican wrestlers are divided in two classes, the técnicos that are the god guys following wrestling rules, and the rudos, the bad guys ignoring rules. So, a wrestling combat is a battle between the good against the evil. This concept was well represented by the classic combats between El Santo (The Saint), a técnico, and Blue Demon, a rudo; and the concept is reinforced because of the names of the wrestlers of course. Other cultural elements in Mexican wrestling are related to prehispanic civilizations, for instance some names of wrestlers are inspired on the prehispanic cultures, there was a luchador named “Guerrero Azteca” (Aztec Warrior), there is a little wrestler named “Alushe” (a goblin of the Mayan culture) and a wrestler girl named “Lady Azteka”. The mask is another element that has been related to prehispanic symbolisms, I’ll talk about that on the post for the following abandoned photo. Thus, la lucha libre mexicana is not only an entertainment show; it is also part of the Mexican culture.

Many people think las luchas are about wrestlers giving fake blows, but blows in wrestling are real. I must say I have saw wrestlers bleeding and having many and big scars. Of course, there is a technique to fight and avoid strong damage to the body, but it doesn’t mean that fighting doesn’t hurt! A good wrestler isn’t the strongest one; a good wrestler is who has an excellent wrestling technique. It’s amazing seeing heavy weight luchadores doing movements as they were dancers in the air. I think la lucha is a rude and hard sport but at same time it's refined having very precise movements such as those doing by ballet dancers. During a combat on the ring it’s possible to see incredible jumps and impacts and the actions for doing that are always very exact and trained movements, just like dance. Hence, for my photo “Dancing and fighting” I was inspired by las luchas and dance. I shot dance some times, at that time I read some books about dance photography in which I discovered the Lois’ Greendfield work. I learnt from his photos the concept of mixing the motion of the human body with untypical framing to create a tight image. Thus, when I worked on “Fighting and dancing” I thought about dance photograpgy, and here´s the result.

I found a photo on the street, the idea


"I found a photo on the street" was born because I had an idea inspired by an old family portrait. Years ago I shared an apartment with a friend of mine. We moved to the flat at same time and the first day living there my roommate hung a framed photo on the wall of the living room. The photo depicted a family wearing in a very old fashioned style, it looked as they were people living during 19th Century, in fact they were; the photo dated from 1891. I asked to my friend who the people in the photo were and he answered “my ancestors”. He always talked with respect about the photo and when we had visiting friends and they asked "Who were the people in the photo?" my roommate took it very seriously and always said “my ancestors”. A day my friend told me more about the origin of the photo. The photo appeared to him years ago while he was walking on the street, well, he found the framed photo among trash bags and picked up it because the image liked to him very much. He didn’t really know who were those people! When I knew that I didn’t think my friend was a liar because although the imaged people were apparent strangers, for my friend they were his real ancestors. He adopted the framed photo and also the image, the photo was owned by him and it got a particular symbolism and story. Now my friend is living in other city, of course the photo is with him and new people ask him about the people in the photo. 

Thinking about that story, I wonder if any framed photo on the street will be adopted by a person. I wonder, if I leave a photo on the street, will someone pick up it? Or maybe the photo will rest there for days until ending in a garbage truck.  On the street, a photo is in the thin red line of being trash or an esthetic object. What is the difference between that? I would like to know if my photos will be trash or they´ll be putt on a wall. I have got many things from the streets, useful things. So, if a photo is a useful thing, why won’t leave a photo expecting that someone will pick up it? If you find a photo on the street, will you take it with you? To know the answer, I have designed a partially controlled project because I want to know if the photo was founded for someone. If the photo travels to Chine, Egypt or Cuba, that’s another good story to know, it’ll be a plus but it won’t be le motif. I would like to know what´s the feeling of finding a framed photo on the street. What did who found the photo think or feel because of the apparition of the photo? “That’s a piece of trash”, “who forgot this photo here?” or “I´ll take it”. That’s what I want to know.
